What Is Reformer Pilates and Why It's Perfect for Everyone

Picture
If you’re looking for a workout that builds strength, improves flexibility, and feels downright fun, reformer Pilates is calling your name. But what exactly is it, and why is it for everyone?

Reformer Pilates is a dynamic, full-body workout performed on a sleek machine called a reformer. The reformer uses springs, a moving carriage, and adjustable straps to create resistance, making every movement both challenging and supportive. It’s low-impact, so your joints will thank you, but don’t be fooled—it can deliver serious results!

One of the greatest benefits of reformer Pilates is its versatility. Whether you’re an elite athlete or haven’t worked out in years, the reformer meets you where you are. The resistance can be adjusted to suit your strength and goals, while the movements can be modified or intensified based on your level of experience.

Here’s why people of all ages and fitness levels love it:
    •    Improved Core Strength: A strong, stable core is essential for everything from daily activities to high-performance sports.
    •    Better Posture: The reformer encourages balanced muscle engagement, helping to realign your body.
    •    Enhanced Flexibility and Mobility: You’ll move in ways that challenge your range of motion without feeling overstrained.
    •    Low-Impact with Big Results: It’s gentle on your joints, making it perfect for those with injuries or sensitivities.

At our studio, we’re passionate about welcoming everyone into reformer Pilates. Whether you’re here to boost your strength, improve your mobility, or just have a great time moving your body, this practice can help you achieve your goals.

Ready to give it a try? Join us and experience the magic of the reformer—it just might become your new favorite workout!

M E E T Our Personal Trainers

Carla
How long have you been in the fitness industry?
I started teaching Yoga 10 years ago and I really fell in love with leading group fitness and watching people grow. Shortly after, I began teaching Barre and in 2021 became a personal trainer. I like to use my background in each modality to create unique plans for every individual.

What got you into fitness?
I have been dancing since I was 3 years old, and that craving for movement has never left me. After I stopped dancing I really struggled to find my identity and find a way to move that felt just as rewarding. Enter yoga and barre. To say that Yoga and Barre changed my life would be an understatement. It was my gateway into the  fitness industry, an industry that has now become my full time job.

What is your favourite type of training?
I love circuit training. There is something for everyone and it easily adapts to the needs of every client.

What is your favourite way to stay active?
Yoga will always remain my 1 true love <3 But if I'm not on my mat you can find me in the studio with the music up reliving my ballet days at the barre.

Brooklyn
How long have you been in the fitness industry?
I started teaching fitness classes originally when I was 17, since then I’ve taken a break to pursue my other degree and certifications (health sciences, medical exercise etc.) I started personal training just 2 years ago, but I find my background in sports, massage and rehabilitation extremely useful when creating training programs for anyone with past injuries, health conditions and unique athletic goals.

What got you into fitness?
I’ve always had a sport to play, mainly soccer, rugby and even belly dance. I find my massage therapy career has been a big factor in wanting to find more ways to help people stay moving and pain free.

What is your favourite type of training?
I really love helping people who are working through injuries, conditions and/or pain find their movement again. I’ve had some major injuries before, and I always feel like a piece of me is missing when I can’t stay mobile and active. Helping people get back to a specific activity they love, getting strong enough to pick up a grandchild, or getting back to daily living pain free, it lights me up to see people excited about moving and staying active.

What is your favourite way to stay active?
Walking my dogs, rock climbing, snowboarding in the winter, paddleboarding in the summer and any time I can take a class supporting my amazing friends here at The Study!

A Self-Care Guide During the Transition from Hot to Cold

As the seasons shift from hot to cold, our skin needs special care to remain healthy and radiant. This transition can exacerbate dryness and sensitivity, especially as the outer layer of skin thins with age and loses essential elements like collagen and hyaluronic acid. To combat these changes, it’s crucial to adapt your skincare routine.
Start by embracing your skin's natural repair cycle. Create a calming “night mode” at home by dimming lights and avoiding electronics an hour before bed. This allows your skin to enter repair mode while you indulge in a relaxing skincare routine or meditation. Additionally, focus on hydration—use products with humectants like hyaluronic acid to help retain moisture, and consider incorporating oil-based serums to restore balance as the colder weather sets in. With these simple adjustments, you can effectively protect and revitalize your skin, ensuring it remains youthful and vibrant.
Meet Lena, the visionary behind HIBYLENA, where natural beauty meets simplicity. She is also the mastermind of THE STUDY skin and body care products. Get to know more about HIBYLENA and explore her product line at hibylena.ca. For the latest updates, connect with her on Instagram @hibylena.

Unwinding the Benefits: Why Regular Massage is Essential for Active Individuals

For those who lead an active lifestyle and regularly hit the gym or participate in sports, massage therapy isn't just a luxury—it's a vital part of a well-rounded fitness regimen. From enhancing performance to aiding recovery, the benefits of massage for active individuals are numerous and impactful. Let’s dive into why incorporating massage into your routine can be a game-changer for both your physical and mental well-being!
1. Boosts Performance
By increasing blood flow to your muscles, massage helps deliver essential nutrients and oxygen needed for peak function. Enhanced circulation also helps in the removal of metabolic waste products, like lactic acid, which can reduce muscle fatigue and improve overall endurance. A well-oxygenated muscle performs better, allowing you to push your limits and achieve your fitness goals more efficiently.
2. Speeds Up Recovery
After an intense workout or competition, your muscles can experience soreness, tightness, and inflammation. Massage therapy helps to mitigate these effects by increasing blood flow and lymphatic drainage, which aids in the quicker removal of toxins and reduction of inflammation. This accelerated recovery process can help you get back to your workouts faster and with less discomfort, ultimately reducing downtime and keeping you on track with your fitness regimen.
3. Reduces Muscle Tension and Pain
Active individuals often deal with muscle tension and soreness as a result of repetitive movements and overuse. Massage helps to relax tight muscles, alleviate knots, and release trigger points. By targeting these areas of tension, massage not only provides immediate relief but also helps prevent chronic issues from developing. Regular sessions can lead to more flexibility and a decrease in the likelihood of injury.
4. Improves Range of Motion and Flexibility
A significant benefit of massage is its impact on flexibility. The therapy works on soft tissues, improving their elasticity and reducing stiffness. This enhancement in range of motion can be particularly beneficial for athletes who require optimal joint and muscle movement. Greater flexibility can also contribute to better technique, efficiency, and performance in various physical activities.
5. Enhances Mental Well-Being
While the physical benefits of massage are widely recognized, its positive effects on mental health are equally important. Massage helps reduce stress and anxiety by lowering cortisol levels and increasing the production of endorphins. For someone who trains hard, balancing mental well-being is crucial for maintaining motivation and focus. The calming effect of massage provides a mental reset, which can improve your overall mood and mental resilience.
6. Helps Prevent Injuries
Incorporating massage into your fitness routine can be an effective preventive measure against injuries. By addressing areas of tightness and imbalance, massage helps to maintain proper alignment and muscle function. Regular sessions can also help identify potential problem areas before they develop into serious issues. This proactive approach can significantly reduce the risk of injuries and ensure long-term athletic longevity.
7. Facilitates Better Sleep
Quality sleep is essential for recovery and overall performance. Massage can contribute to improved sleep patterns by promoting relaxation and reducing physical discomfort. A well-rested body is more resilient and better able to handle the demands of an active lifestyle. By integrating massage into your routine, you can enjoy deeper, more restorative sleep, which supports overall health and fitness goals.

Massage therapy is more than just a soothing experience; it is a critical component of a comprehensive fitness strategy. For those who lead an active lifestyle, the benefits of regular massage are extensive, encompassing improved performance, accelerated recovery, reduced muscle tension, enhanced flexibility, and better mental well-being. Incorporating massage into your routine not only aids in achieving peak physical condition but also ensures a balanced approach to overall health and fitness. So, whether you're an elite athlete or a weekend warrior, consider making massage a regular part of your wellness regimen. Your body—and mind—will thank you for it!
